My Neighbor Totoro – The Film
My Neighbor Totoro is a much loved Japanese anime film which was released in 1988 by Studio Ghibli. In the year of its launch the movie received the Animage Anime Grand Prix prize, an award voted for by readers of Animage magazine.
The film was first released in the US on video in 1993 with the title ‘My Friend Totoro’. This release of the film was launched by Troma Films and Fox Video who’s rights to distribute My Neighbor Totoro expired in 2004.
Disney took up the rights to the film and premiered their new English language version in October 2005, and it later appeared at the 2005 Hollywood Film Festival. At the beginning of 2006 the Disney version was aired on the Turner Classic Movies cable TV network and a few months later was released on DVD.
The Disney version of My Neighbor Totoro featured the voices of Dakota as Satsuki, Elle Fanning as Mei, Timothy Daly as Mr Kusakabe, Pat Caroll as Granny, Lea Salonga as Mrs Kusakabe and Frank Welker as Totoro and Catbus.
